Resaw Work April 2017
My adventure a few weeks ago with resawing old lumber on Millie the saw mill went well. I have a large piece of walnut that has been languishing in the back shed for 30 some years. It was whittled from a log using a chainsaw without any guides. Needless to say the 10” wide surfaces were pretty rough. I clamped the piece on the saw mill bed, made a minimal cut off the top and then flipped it to start cutting. Another minimal cut was made to get past the uneven parts and then I could start cutting. The first full cut was about 1/8” thick – even thickness for the whole width and length. Two pictures show the rough top piece and the 1/8” thick piece. You can also see why it would have been better to seal the ends of the board. This one was not sealed and the ends did split back several inches.
The other two pictures show a chunk of walnut root having the top trimmed. I have to be creative when clamping odd shaped pieces and have had good luck so far. The walnut root has to dry now – not sure if it will amount to anything useful but it will be fun finding out.
I can resaw your boards and have carbide tipped blades when necessary for the hardest boards.
